Harvey Nichols’ Visual Merchandising and Display team contacted Carousel Lights asking for our help in producing their now-iconic Christmas Window signs. They had something very special up their sleeves so after signing an NDA we received the design concepts from their brilliant team – the plan was to create BAH HUMBUG – BRING ON 2021 neon signs for the windows in their UK stores, with their flagship Knightsbridge store being the highest profile.
London – Sloane Street, Seville Street and Knightsbridge / Bristol / Edinburgh / Leeds / Manchester
The largest single neon letter was the G of BAH HUMBUG in the London store windows, measuring 1.8m (h) x 1.59m (w). The smallest single neon letter was the 1 of BRING ON 2021 in the Sloane Street window which was 0.135m (h).
The easiest part of the project was the final production of the neon signage. As ever with a project of this size and complexity, the majority of time was spent on planning. We went through technical information regarding the layout of each window and then measured, re-measured and then measured again in order to ensure that the final neon signage supplied would fit perfectly into the space.
Each neon sign compromised 6mm strokewidth Ice White LED flex embedded into 10mm polished clear acrylic. Each sign was pre-wired on the reverse of the acrylic meaning the cables were extremely discrete but whislt being accessible should that be required for maintenance.
The publicity generated from the window design was prolific. This indicates that at the time it was being seen as not only capturing the mood of the nation but also being seen as culturally significant and an iconic Christmas window design scheme, or which Carousel Lights is extremely honoured to have been trusted to deliver the core part of – the neon signage.
Harvey Nichols’ exceptional design team summed up our involvement as;
With the landscape moving so fast, our decisions had to be made closer to the time to ensure our windows encapsulated the current mood with Harvey Nichols’ sense of humour. As such, it was vital that we worked with a company that produced high-quality work and could turn things round very quickly, to bring our ideas to life in a short timeframe. And Carousel Lights fit the bill perfectly.
